Midsummer Night Dream Dancers, 42 x 42.5", by Lynne S Dallmeyer-Hartman (Florida), quilted by Julia Quiltoff

This wonderful quilt includes a unicorn, dragons, and other fantastical beasts. Lynne Dallmeyer-Hartman says, "Have you ever wondered what it would be like to dance among mythical creatures? As I was creating this quilt, I envisioned these creatures frolicking across meadows in a summer moonlit night. The magnificent blues along with the exquisite quilting make these mystical creatures come to life."

The quilt center was based on a design [Fantasy Meets at Midnight] by Michele Hill at William Morris in Quilting.

Terraced, 61.5 x 46.25", by Thom Atkins (California)

Here is an extremely artistic depiction of rice gatherers in South Vietnam. Exhibited in the Innovative category, Terraced began as a 3.5" x 3.5" photo that originally appeared in a magazine.  Thom Atkins says, "I took the image and stretched it in Photoshop and changed the color from yellow/green to  yellow/red shades."  This striking original design was machine appliqued and machine quilted.

The Year of the Masks, 86 x 86.6", by Rhonda Montgomery (Utah), quilted by Charlene Nelson

Winner of 1st Place in the Innovative Quilt category, Rhonda Montgomery says: "This quilt adventure began in 1990 at a Superbowl in New Orleans. I fell in love with the masquerade masks I saw and knew one day I would make a quilt with masks."  We empathize with the message on the quilt: "Masquerading as normal is exhausting."

Rhonda continues, "I also love making wearable art but am too afraid to wear it.  I thought about the masks we hide behind and decided to make a quilt combining the two ideas.  I wish I could always be the girl in the mirror."

The Year of the Masks was machine pieced, hand appliqued, and longarm machine quilted by Charlene Nelson.

Golden, Golden Days, 88 x 88", by Ann Zemke

Golden, Golden Days was featured in a special exhibit titled Ann Zemke: One-Woman Hand Piecing & Hand Applique Renaissance for All About Color Quilting.  Based on a pattern by Jen Kingwell, the applique blocks and circle borders were created using the freezer paper prepared applique method.

The pieced blocks and diamond borders were created using a plastic template, tracing the back of the fabric piece, cutting a 1/4" seam allowance and then hand piecing into a block.  The four patches and blocks were machine pieced together. The finished creation was custom quilted with a wool batt over a cotton batt with ruler work, free motion and digitized designs.
