Second Time Around, made & quilted by Lois Klein

This fun quilt was based on the Off Track pattern by Allison Harris of Cluck Cluck Sew.  Lois Klein says, "I made this quilt twice - one for charity, one mine! With this simple design, playing with the colors was the fun part."  Floral and other prints in cool greens, blues, and purples make up this soothing palette.

Morse Code by Jill Kerr

Morse code is a method used in telecommunication to encode text characters as standardized sequences of two different signal durations, called dots and dashes.  Jill Kerr used Morse Code to create the entire alphabet - from A to Z - in quilted form. In the process, she created a modern art quilt with strong graphic impact. The quilt was created for, and exhibited in, a special 2023 Alphabet Quilt exhibit.

Modern Stars by Cindi Huff

Modern Stars was based on a quilt challenge by Gina Perkes Designs.  Nine different star blocks are included in this sampler quilt. The maker, Cindi Huff says: "This quilt was made specifically with the quilting in mind.  I had fun planning how to quilt each star using my rulers while following Gina Perkes-Tidwell's advice and playing on my own."

Bento Blast by Nicole Wegleitner, quilted by Penny Boese

Bento Blast was based on a Nine Patch Bento Box quilt pattern by Janet Wickell. Nicole Wegleitner says, "In 2020, I was inspired by my best friend's mother, and decided to take up a quilting hobby. This is the first quilt I ever made and it took roughly 6 months from start to finish." The greens and blues make a lovely complement against the bright white and gray squares.

Ascend by Christine Muccianti

Christine Muccianti created an original modern quilt by placing triangles that resemble arrowheads. The solid color shading lends a 3D effect to the quilt.  She says, "This design allowed me to play with light and movement. I chose rich colors that make the shapes pop off the background.  while each block individually has upward motion, the arrangement of the orange accent blocks adds left-to-right motion."

Bursting Free by Susie Voss, quilted by Penny Allen

"Bursting Free" was based on Ricky Tims' Grand Convergence design [in Ricky Tims' Convergence Quilts]. The saturated hues of the batiks add tremendous energy to this quilt! Susie Voss says, "After finishing the convergence pattern and having it quilted, I felt as though the dark blue strips were a "jail cell" confining the energy within.  So I cut the quilt and released this fiery energy."

A Modern Log Cabin by Christine Nelson, quilted by Dianne Martini (Arizona)

Log cabin blocks and the way they are arranged are classics! Christine Nelson created this wall quilt with blue mod print fabric, and used a complementary orange squares as highlights. Christine says, "I had the blue fabric in this quilt for a couple of years before I figured out what to do with it... Log cabin blocks and the way they are arranged are classics."

Modern Plumbing, design by Malcolm Neifeld, made & quilted by Kris Neifeld

What a clever variation on a tumbling block!  Light, medium and dark values create the optical illusion. Malcolm Neifeld says, "Most of my time is taken up by school, so after designing this and choosing fabrics, my mom pieced the top.  I chose the quilting. This was designed in the midst of my isometric 3-D fascination.  I wanted to make more than a cool cube, and gave myself the challenge of writing the instructions without the use of "Y" seams."

Circles by Caroline Ellermann

This original art quilt which was designed, made, and quilted by Caroline Ellermann. She says, "This art quilt resulted from a class where we learned how to use a 'cut-a-round' tool." Caroline  created contrasts and texture by using a variety of fabrics including a really interesting background. Circle motifs were also quilted within the appliqued circles and lines.

Miriam's Grid #6 by Karen G. Fisher

It's hard to go wrong with red, black and white! Karen Fisher says, "I made this miniature interpretation of a grid my daughter Miriam designed over twenty years ago, in response to a "modern Mini" challenge that was exhibited in Wisconsin in 2022." Design source: Variation from Easy Grid Quilts by Karen Fisher (2012). The scattered red squares really enliven this quilt!

Bow by Sara Quigley

Sara Quigley says, "I was pleased to take the class with Carolyn Friedlander at QuiltCon (2022).  I enjoyed this hand applique project which was inspired by the arcs of a rainbow." For the finishing touch, Bow was hand quilted using a large stitch.

 

Fabulous floral, checkerboard, and solid color prints were included in the design.  Sara says that many of the fun prints are by Carolyn Friedlander as well.

Growing Tall by Kathie Miller, quilted by Nancy Stein

Kathie says, "Who knew curves could be fun and easy! It was a joy watching this quilt "grow" out of the lovely fabrics that came in a kit.  [Quilter] Nancy Stein added a terrific edge-to-edge design which complements the whimsical nature of this sweet quilt." Growing Tall is based on the Beanstalk quilt pattern by Robin Pickens.

Hexicube Star by Kris Neifeld

Kris Neifeld's Hexicube Star is based on an original design by Malcolm Neifeld.  In this unique design, six cubes are arranged in an overlapping fashion, creating a star in the middle. Kris says, "Malcolm has designed many quilts over the past few years... I had the privilege of constructing this one."

Once Upon a Time by Kira Holladay (Utah)

Once Upon a Time is the beginning of many fairy tales.  This original quilt depicts the heartwarming scene of a mother reading to her child. Kira Holladay used pixels to outline a mother, with a child on her lap, and an open book. The extensive white background is not negative space: it is quilted with characters from numerous childhood stories.

Kira says, "Some of my favorite moments in life are when we see life together, and reading is just one way to do that. This quilt showcases 112 of our favorite stories. Some are classics, others are lesser known, and one is unpublished."

Freewheeling Single Girl by Manya Powell, quilted by Creative Lines Quilting

This is a fantastic modern take on the traditional double wedding ring, based on the Freewheeling Single Girl pattern from Denyse Schmidt Quilts.  Manya Powell says: "[This project was] definitely a fun, work-intensive quilt. I added my own touch to it with the color placements." The use of neutral prints as background helps soften the whole appearance of the quilt.

Plus Squared, made and quilted by Debra Kay

This wonderful modern quilt is based on  Quilty Love's Plus Squared quilt pattern. Debra Kay explains, "Plus quilts are an easy way to make a dramatic statement. I added a strip in between the pluses as a variation on the theme done in batiks on gray linen." We love the use of high contrasts and cool hues.

It's All a Game by Sheryl Gillilan (Utah)

Sheryl Gillilan says, "When I designed this quilt it reminded me of a combination of Tiddly Winks, Twister, and checkerboards - all games from my childhood." The black-and-white border, and striped binding, sets off the colorful blocks. Each block has contrasting hues and values.  Sheryl finished the quilt with a grid quilting design.

Ups and Downs by Monique Baczewski, quilted by Creative Lines Quilting

Monique Baczewski based her modern quilt on the "Ups and Downs" pattern in the book Hand Quilted with Love by Sarah Fielke.  Monique says, "I was attracted to this quilt because of Sarah Fielke's use of a textured linen background against the smooth, bright colors of patchwork fabrics. My quilt is made with linen blend and a variety of colorful Kaffe Fassett fabrics.  It was really fun to make." Some of the fantastic fabrics can be seen in the closeup photo, below.

A Study in Fillers by Athena Taylor

A Study in Fillers was made and quilted by Athena Taylor, using a quilting design inspired by Bethanne Nemesh. This stunning quilt won the Quilt Show Chair's Choice award. Both the front and back were custom ice dyed by Athena Taylor.

Athena says, "The quilting was done in overlapping double circles of various sizes, each filled with a different design.  This was very fun to do!"

Most Days by Carlton Brown (California)

This great quilt by Carlton Brown includes most of the 90 Tula Pink City Sampler blocks, along with 10 self-designed blocks. The colors of the work are inspired by the paintings of the African-American artist, Jennifer Packer. The quilt's binding matches the major colors of the quilt and is quilted in a modern matchstick approach. Carlton Brown says, "Be on the lookout for many bugs, birds, and other unusual objects.  Called Most Days, this quilt represents most days of life... colorful and happy."
