Kaffe Fassett Quilt Inspiration: Carried Away

Kaffe Fassett has inspired people across the world with his creative, colorful fabrics. We love seeing these fabrics in creative settings! Here is a brilliant hexagon quilt featuring bright colors, contrasts, and tons of visual interest.

Carried Away by Joyce Harrison

This award-winning quilt was based on a traditional 'one block' hexagon design. Many well-loved Kaffe Fassett fabrics are included in this quilt. Oranges and blues were used for color contrast, and light and dark patches add to the visual interest.

The maker, Joyce Harrison says: "As a second attempt hexie project, Kaffe Fassett fabric was a 'must' for color. A wider border gave me more room for machine quilting."  Carried Away was awarded second place in the medium pieced / machine quilted category.

Kaffe Fassett Quilt Inspiration: Glorious Splendor

Kaffe Fassett has inspired people across the world with his creative, colorful fabrics. We love seeing these fabrics in new and unusual settings! Here is a vibrant sampler quilt that uses strings of diamonds for the sashings and border. We love the very creative use of color.

Color Me - Glorious Splendor by Yvonne M. Flores, quilted by Quality Quilterz

This vibrant quilt by Yvonne Flores was based on the 2022 Glorious Splendor Mystery Series by Michele Renee Hiatt at 'Sew On The Go'.  The mystery quilt was an 18 week series using Studio 180 rulers.  Yvonne Flores says, "I had leftover fabric from a previous quilt and accumulated fat quarters that I thought would "play" well together.  I love color and finding new combinations." The result is certainly stunning.

Paper Piecing Quilts: Goodnight Star

Paper piecing is a type of quilt making in which you sew patches directly onto a paper template (foundation).  You then join the different sections to construct the full quilt. The technique allows tremendous precision and can be used for nearly every type of pieced quilt, including this stunning "Goodnight Star" quilt with fabrics by Tula Pink.

p.s. Please see our E-Bay shop for great bargains on patterns and vintage collectibles. For continuous free quilt patterns and blog updates, please visit us on Twitter.

Goodnight Star with fabrics by Tula Pink, quilt design by Quiltworx

Twelve different vibrant fabrics combine with black and white in this eye-catching design, which transforms the night sky into a burst of color. We love rainbow quilts and lone star designs !

A complete quilt kit can be found at several websites, including Stitchin Heaven, as of this post.  The quilt design is by Quiltworx.  To purchase the pattern alone, please visit Quiltster.

Phread on the Run by Lisa Fryxell

The grace, beauty and aloofness of the Afghan Hound comes alive in Lisa Fryxell's interpretation of BaiJai's 'Phread' of New York.

Lisa Fryxell says, "Phread was well known around the Clinton Corners, NY area as he would take his owner, Kate Anderson (Verbeke) for daily 5-mile runs along with his sister Afghan.  Kate was later recognized as 'The lady who runs with the dogs.' "

As of this writing, the paper-piecing pattern is available at Lisa's Prefurred Quilt Shop on Etsy (see Running Afghan.)

Moonlight Sunflowers by Melanie Harris, quilted by John Harris

We love the spectacular color combinations and precision piecing of Moonlight Sunflowers!  Melanie Harris says that this was her first paper pieced quilt, and her husband's first custom quilting. The feathery quilting, done in light-colored thread, enhances the design and complements the batik patterns. Melanie based her quilt on a Sunflower Illusions pattern by Quiltworx.

Imarra by Marilyn Reid Pollow, quilted by Quality Quilterz

This stunning, large quilt depicts a female elephant matriarch in her habitat in Africa. This great quilt was based on the Elephant Abstractions pattern by Violet Craft. Marilyn Reid Pollow created an artistic background with natural-hued prints resembling the ground, trees/bushes, and sky. A particularly clever touch was the use of two different African print fabrics in the double border. The overall quilting design resembles giant footprints (below).

In the closeup photo below, you can see the elephant's eye and the bridge of its trunk, all done with paper piecing using gray, taupe, and black fabrics.

Paper Piecing Quilts: Rocky Mountain Trout

Paper piecing is a type of quilt making in which you sew patches directly onto a paper template (foundation).  You then join the different sections to construct the full quilt. It allows tremendous precision and can be used for nearly every type of quilt.  As Lisa Fryxell shows, you can even create stunning landscapes with this technique!

Rocky Mountain Trout by Lisa Fryxell / Prefurred Quilt Shop (Etsy)

This original landscape brings to life the dream of "catching a big one"! A fisherman is standing in the stream with a huge fish on the line and Rocky Mountains in the background.   Lisa Fryxell says that she designed this paper-pieced quilt to celebrate a recent move to Colorado. This great pattern is available at Lisa's Prefurred Quilt Shop at Etsy.com.

As shown below, there is an actual trout fly in the mouth of the fish. Trout flies are tied with feathers and thread on a hook to resemble an actual fly. Lisa says that fishermen at their local fly-fishing shop were most helpful in picking out the 'blue dragonfly'.

It's Almost Fall, Y'All

When will summer end and the cooler days of fall begin? The autumnal equinox—also called the September equinox—arrives on Saturday, September 23. Autumn is one of the best seasons to enjoy the glorious colors of our changing environment. Mother Nature brings out her prettiest deep greens, sunny golds, and vivid oranges and reds before beginning her winter repose.

Third Weekend in October by Ruth Powers at Ruth Powers Art Quilts

A well-loved favorite at quilt shows, "Third Weekend in October" captures the very essence of sun-dappled warm hues. Ruth sprinkled fabrics with lighter values diagonally across the quilt and placed some leaves overlapping the borders. This technique gives the quilt a very natural, realistic, outdoors look, much as we might view a scattering of leaves on our front lawn. To purchase the pattern, visit Ruth Powers' website.

For a smaller project, here is a cute and easy FREE mini quilt by Pat Sloan for Olfa (click for the FREE pattern):

We also love the "Fall Ya All" mini quilt by Sandy Gervais. This quilt was part of the "Follow The Blue Bird Quilt Along" for Riley Blake Designs. Did you miss the QAL? As of this writing, you can still get the FREE pattern at Pieces From My Heart (CLICK):

Modern Quilt Month: Modern Fans

We're finishing up Modern Quilt Month here at Quilt Inspiration! We've been posting a new modern quilt each weekday... we hope you have enjoyed our photos! Today's fun quilt is a modern take on a traditional design.

p.s. Please see our E-Bay shop for great bargains on patterns and vintage collectibles. For continuous free quilt patterns and blog updates, please visit us on Twitter.

Modern Fans, made by Janet Pugh & quilted by Linda Cote.

We hope our photo does justice to this lovely quilt with its plum-colored background (it's rally hard to photograph this color under artificial light!) Janet Pugh says, "My quilt began with a jelly roll of Kaffe Fassett's shot cotton.  I chose his plum-colored to pull the many shades together.  I think it adds a very modern spin to a traditional pattern."  She used a pattern from 'Jelly Roll Dreams' (by Pam & Nicky Lintott, 2012.)  Linda Cote did the quilting, adding a very decorative touch to the wedges.
