To Spring by Debbie Corbett, 33" x 45", quilted by Mike Corbett

Winner of the Second Place award for Mixed Media quilts, Debbie explains, "This is a cheery quilt taking us into springtime. We utilized mixed media with applique and embroidery. There are many different quilting pattern, honey bees, grass, and those first spring flowers."

(The pattern is "Changing Seasons-Springtime" by The Stitch Connection).

But wait, there's more ! Debbie's creation also includes an adorable Easter bunny with a carrot, bright tulips tied with ribbon, a kite with a ribbon tail, a butterfly out in the spring breeze, and a darling cottage with a heart above the doorstep. Sunny yellow sashing and a perky half-square triangle border help complete this happy look.  We wish you a wonderful spring season, full of new awakenings, a sense of re-birth, and the hope for eternal renewal.

Miniature Quilts Galore ! part 1

Miniature quilts are some of the most fun projects we've seen.  In these quilts the traditional blocks are reduced to a fraction of their traditional size. They are technically challenging, visually intriguing, and so much easier to display than a regular quilt! In the next few weeks we'll be featuring some beautiful examples of this art form.  You'd never know that this quilt is less than 12" in size.

Very Mini Mari by Emily Jackson (California)

Emily Jackson made this stunning miniature mariner's compass star quilt in a stunning green and blue design.  The high-contrast colors give the star blocks a 3D appearance! The very creative reverse applique border echoes the circular shapes surrounding the compass stars.  Emily Jackson says, "My love of tiny applique and reverse applique tied the blocks together.

We admired Emily's perfect paper piecing of the eight-pointed star blocks. In the quilt description she says, "A dear friend introduced me to miniature quilting, and encouraged me to take it to the extreme by miniaturizing a traditional compass block from 18” diameter to about 3” diameter.

To show just how tiny this quilt is, here's a photo of it hanging with other miniatures on the display wall:
