The sun as a theme in art, and in human life, is undeniable. An event like a solar eclipse highlights the sun's life-giving power, as does the summer solstice tomorrow in the Northern Hemisphere. Today's featured quilt depicts a solar eclipse, turning the sun into a glorious 'ring of fire'.

Ring of Fire - Solar Eclipse, made and quilted by Penni Klick
An annular solar eclipse, often referred to as the "ring of fire," occurs when the Moon covers the center of the Sun, leaving the outer edges visible as a bright ring. Penni Klick says that a Mavericks Art Quilters challenge, and an online photo posted by K&F Concept, inspired this quilt. "To give a feel of fire, I used a lighter to burn the raw edges of many polyester fabrics."
After a presentation by Deb Deaton, Penni added more embellishing and quilting to further enhance the brilliance of the solar eclipse. Note: For another of Penni's creations, titled Christmas Eve in Montana, please see our 2017 post.
