Oh My Garden: Broderie Perse!

Broderie Perse is one of our favorite quilting styles! This type of appliqué uses fussy-cut flowers (or other motifs) to create a design on a background. With the colorful fabrics available today — including Kaffe Fassett fabrics — this technique is more fun than ever! Here's a gorgeous example.

p.s. Check out our E-Bay shop for bargains on jewelry, clothing, and collectibles.  For continuous free quilt patterns, follow us on X (Twitter).

Oh My Garden, made and quilted by Karen West (Union Hall, Virginia).

Oh My Garden is an original design by Karen West, done with machine applique and quilting.  Karen says, "I walk daily and admire my neighbors' gardens. Then, I search for fabrics that include beautiful, colorful flowers.  I love carefully cutting them out and spending many hours arranging them like a garden.  The most fun is adding lots of stitching."

Butterflies and tiny bees add to the garden experience!

The bottom edge of the quilt features appliqued coleus leaves. These remind us of the gorgeous coleus prints by Philip Jacobs for Kaffe Fassett Collective.

May include: A colorful pattern of overlapping leaves in shades of green, purple, orange, and red. The leaves have intricate details and textures.

Kaffe Fassett x Sparrows

Q: What are quilters making with Kaffe Fassett fabrics? A: Everything under the sun, including birdies! These colorful prints and bright white background remind us of spring.

Birdies by Doreen Diaz, quilted by Athena Taylor

Doreen Diaz says this was a fun quilt to make using Kaffe Fassett fabrics! The pattern source is Sparrows, a traditionally pieced pattern by Lindsey Neill at Pen & Paper Patterns. Doreen created a scrappy pieced border using even more of her fabric stash!

The original Sparrows pattern looks totally different in solids as shown at Pen & Paper patterns.  The possibilities are endless!

A Garden of Yo-Yos (+ FREE patterns!)

Do you love yo-yos like we love yo-yos?  Here's an award-winning flower garden featuring yo-yos, crocheted flowers, and beaded embellishments.  Also scroll down for three FREE patterns for yo-yo projects!

Hello Garden, made and quilted by Ana Martinez.

Winner of a Quilt Show Chair's Choice award at the 2026 Tucson Quilt Fiesta, Hello Garden is an original wall quilt by Ana Martinez. The piece was inspired by buttons, yo yos and crochet flower embellishments that resemble a field of flowers. Fused stems and ribbons were appliqued onto a machine pieced and quilted background with hand sewn buttons, beads and ribbons. The ombre patchwork is the perfect backdrop for the flowers!

Yo-yos are portable and scrap-friendly, and create a charming, textured look. There are even plastic yo-yo makers in different sizes that make it easy. Here are three FREE yo yo projects you might enjoy:

Lollypop Trees!

Kim McLean has inspired hundreds of quilters with her bright, cheery designs. Featuring Kaffe Fassett fabrics, her designs make us smile. We hope you enjoy these Lollypop Tree quilts from recent shows!

p.s. Please visit our E-Bay shop for great bargains on jewelry, clothing, and collectibles! For blog highlights and free patterns, follow us on Twitter!

Life in Lost City by Denise Bell, quilted by Ann Olson

The maority of the center four blocks are from Kim Mclean's Lollypop Trees pattern, but Denise Bell created her own border and embellishments. Denise says her version of Kim Mclean's pattern took an awkward turn after she experienced a motorcycle accident.  "Recovering, I had time to ponder my rural surroundings, which didn't include sculpted trees but did include wild grape vines, frogs, pollinators, and a wealth of wildlife that began to populate my quilt."

Check out the fussy-cut peace symbols and daisies, and the tinhy bee in the border! To the left of the bee is an appliqued snail. Hand applique, embellishment, and piecing; and machine quilting were used to create this beauty.

Left-over Lollypop Trees, made and quilted by Pat Morris

Pat Morris based this wonderful quilt on the Lollypop Trees pattern by Kim McLean.  Pat says, "It is hand appliqued using Kaffe Fassett fabrics in my stash. I made a larger quilt and had six left over blocks." She alternated cool and warm blocks for a harmonious design.

Lollypop Trees by Linda Jenkins, quilted by Penny Boese.

Linda Jenkins says she loved this pattern and chose to make it in Kaffe Fassett fabrics. She started the top in March, 2018 and finished it October 15, 2025. Winner of Exemplary Machine Quilting - Computer Guided, the outstanding quilting was done by Penny Boese.

Guidance for the Tribe by Stephanie Leuthesser, quilted by Jessica Jones.

Winner of 1st Place  for Machine Embroidery, Stephanie Leuthesser says she loved choosing all the colors and finally using her embroidery machine to the max.  "Because my first 12 Kachinas were done on a flannel, they puckered despite using good stabilizers... I changed the background fabric and made 12 more that you see here. The Kachinas were from the Embroidery Library. The feathers and arrows are from Anita Goodesign.

Sawyer's Pasture Paradise, made and quilted by Millie Burgheimer

Winner of a Third Place ribbon in the pictorial category, this original quilt was based on Millie Burgheimer's own photo of her daughter's horse. The very clever binding was from her husband's saddle blanket. From a distance this looks like a painting; up close you can see the intricate stitching that creates the imagery.

Diamond Mine, made and quilted by Marianne Nowacki.

Diamond Mine was based on the Indian Blanket pattern by Reeze L. Hanson. Marianne Nowacki says that every piece of Kaffe Fassett fabric was cut using a diamond template. "Working in diagonal rows and maintaining the pattern was a challenge! I used lots of baggies in order to keep all the colors and pieces organized."

Garden Party by Gail Witt, quilted by Jessica Jones

Winner of Best of Show - Team, plus 1st place in the Mixed Technique - Duet category, this gorgeous quilt is an adaptation of a traditional New York Beauty quilt. Gail Witt says, "I added fussy cut Kaffe flowers, vines, leaves and butterflies to the design.  Techniques include applique, paper piecing, and embroidery. The diagonal setting was inspired by other New York Beauty quilts.  The quilting by Jessica Jones adds dimension and whimsy."

Seed Packet quilt by Pat Morris, quilted by Athena Taylor

This glorious quilt was based on a kit by Glorious Color, comprising lots of large fussy cut pink and red fabrics from the Kaffe Fassett Collective.  It is machine pieced and longarm machine quilted. What a lovely way to feature these floral fabrics.

Hot Stuff, made and quilted by Joyce Harrison.

So many fun Kaffe Fassett classics were used in this fun quilt! This English paper pieced quilt is an original by Joyce Harrison, who says: "The more I made hexies, the more I wanted and the longer it became. I had to stop at some point.  EPP is calming to sew... I didn't use my sewing machine for 6 months!"

Plaidy Cake by Pat Morris, quilted by Athena Taylor.

Here is a beautiful summery "woven" quilt design! Pat Morris says that she made this scrappy quilt using a partial quilt kit and fabric from her stash, including lots of beautiful blue and green favorites from Kaffe Fassett Collective. Pattern source: Plaidy Cake by Cluck Cluck Sew.
