Victory Garden

Winner of Best of Show at a 2023 Tucson (Arizona) Quilt Fiesta, this 10-year project began as a block-of-the-month with Bella Quiltworks in 2013. It is based on a pattern by Susan Powell called Victory Garden. Janet Rupp completed the blocks in 2014. The quilt was finished in 2021 and 2022.

Autumn, made and quilted by Janet Rupp 

Winner of Best of Show and 1st Place (One Person Applique - Machine Quilted) at the 2023 Quilt Fiesta in Tucson, Arizona. Each block has a different vegetable: a pumpkin, chard, peas, carrots, turnip and more. The elaborate borders have yellow sunflowers and purple grape clusters.

The Raven

Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe's poem "The Raven," this nine block quilt is designed to welcome autumn. Each block's name is taken from a bit of Poe's poetry. The birds, whether perching on a pumpkin or silhouetted by the light of the harvest moon, are sure to add a bit of whimsy.

The Raven by Karin Dunham, quilted by Jean Firestine. 

 

The Raven quilt is based on the poem of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe. The pattern is by Alma Allen and Barb Adams at Blackbird Designs. This quilt is hand-appliqued by Karin Dunham; Jean Firestine added the lovely machine quilting. The applique and quilting are beautifully done.

Recycled Beauty

Made to honor the Fall season, this original art quilt is constructed from repurposed industry samples and leftover garments, transforming off-cuts into art.  Circles and rings overlap in interesting ways. We especially love the use of tartans (plaids) which add so much texture to this piece.

Falling by Catherine Gardner (Ontario, Canada) 

Catherine Gardner used machine applique, embellishment, piecing, and quilting to make this wall quilt. Printed and quilted maple leaves play tribute to the season (see the closeup photo below).  Catherine explains: "Fall, to me, is the beginning of a great recycling program.  One hundred percent of this wall hanging is made from repurposed industry samples and leftover garments... Each imperfect component dictates the form."

Autumn Glory

This art quilt captures the beauty of trees in autumn, with textures of bark and the sun shining through, casting brilliant reds and oranges. The undergrowth is a mixture of mosses, ferns, red sumac, and dogwood, with shadows and light playing on the forest floor.

Autumn Glory by Christine Barker (Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada).  

Dappled light shines through the trees, reminding us of walks in the woods. Christine Barker depicted the beauty of autumn using hand applique and dyeing; machine applique, strip piecing, and quilting.

Scattered Leaves (+ FREE tessellation tutorial!)

Gorgeous fall colors make up this quilt, with leaves that form a tessellating design. Just as some leaves stay green longer than others on the trees, this quilt has greens along with rich orange, brown, and yellow hues.  Scroll down to find a free block tutorial for tessellating leaves!

Scattered Leaves by Shirley Challice (Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada)  

 

 

This quilt was based on a pattern called Tessellation Blues by Maria Umhey (published in McCalls Quilting Magazine, January 2012.) Shirley Challice says, "I made this pattern in creams and indigos several years ago and considered making it in fall colors. The "O'Canada" exhibit was great motivation to create it again at half the size."

 

Scattered Leaves was beautifully machine pieced and quilted with the Maple Swirl pantograph by Urban Elementz. 

The McCall's pattern is no longer available, but we found a FREE tessellated leaves block tutorial by Yvonne at Quilting JetGirl (CLICK HERE for tutorial).  Yvonne also has a digital pattern available for purchase, including multiple finished quilt sizes (photo below...CLICK HERE for pattern link!)

Dancing Leaves, made and quilted by Marjory Mutton (Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada).  

This great wall quilt is based on the Scrappy Maple Leaf quilt pattern by Cindy Carter (download the free quilt pattern HERE).  

Marjory Mutton says, "I saw a picture of a quilt on the internet, and the scrappy style appealed to me.  it inspired me to create my own version, which I called Dancing Leaves.  I have a large collection of fall-colored scraps I wanted to showcase, so I ran with it.  Enjoy!"

Seasonal Convergence

Layers of pieced, warm colors evoke the depth of a seasonal change in this wonderful original art quilt by Debra Goley.

Fall leaves of the cottonwoods overhang the path along a river on a seasonably warm day.  Summer meets fall with grace and gives a sense of pause before the temperatures change and the leaves are but a whisper and all but gone.  

Debra Goley is a fiber artist living in the west valley of Phoenix, Arizona since 2003. Her journey has taken her to live a life overseas from a young age, later practicing Architecture in Washington, DC, and Texas to now a full-time artist in Arizona. Home is where the heart is! This fantastic sampler quilt features blue skies, purple mountains, green trees, running water and autumn leaves. A cozy cabin was built in the middle of this magical terrain.

Cabin by the Lake, made and quilted by Luanne Wood.  

Luanne won a blue ribbon for this beautiful quilt. She enjoys making quilts with various block sizes, and this one kept her busy throughout the year! She quilted custom motifs in the open spaces; Can you see the canoe, ducks, and fish in the closeup photo below? 

The pattern source is Cabin by the Lake by Royal Quilt Designs. [As of this writing, the quilt pattern can still be found at various internet sites.]
