Tango Stripes, 61 x 78", by Toni Terhaar, quilted by Annette Blandin

Tango Stripes was based on the On-Point Handkerchief Corners quilt in Kaffe Fassett Quilts: Shots and Stripes, but instead of the whole surface being covered with blocks, Toni Terhaar floated the blocks within a wide gold border.  This makes the on-point blocks really stand out.  Toni Terhaar says that she wanted to challenge herself by matching all of the stripes in these blocks.

Southwest Squares, 52 x 78, by Daryl Lynn, quilted by Laura Jansen

After years of blogging here on Quilt Inspiration about other people's quilts, Daryl Lynn finally took the time to make a quilt to enter into a show. The quilt received a blue ribbon at the 2016 Guild of Quilters of Contra Costa County (California) show.

Daryl Lynn based her quilt on the "Bright Squares" design featured in the 2015 book, Heritage Quilts by Kaffe Fassett.  This quilt is comprised of more than one thousand 2-inch fabric squares.  The squares were sewn into big 26 inch square blocks, which were then pieced together.

Note: This design is traditionally known as a Philadelphia Pavement quilt, which is a variation of Trip Around the World. If you enjoyed this post you may be interested in our FREE PATTERN DAY for Trip Around the World quilts (CLICK HERE):

Clamshell Surprise by Lou Ellen Hassold, quilted by Valerie Wagner

Winner of the Art Prize at this show*, Lou Ellen writes, "I wanted a vivid, interesting look for my version of Judy Niemeyer's  'Clamshells'.  The quilt was made from a variety of Kaffe Fassett scraps, paired with Moda Grunge fabrics. I was pleasantly surprised by the results as the quilt was even brighter than I imagined. It almost seemed to glow as if lit from behind. Valerie Wagner's quilting design adds a lovely texture."

What really sets off these color-saturated fabrics is Lou Ellen's choice of black background fabric. It provides a striking visual effect which separates each clamshell motif and highlights the intense hues.

My First Double Wedding Ring by Lisa Mason, quilted by Rachael Dorr (Connecticut)

Lisa Mason explains her inspiration: "I had been saving these Kaffe Fassett stripes and plaids for a long time and decided to mix them up with peppered cottons. I used the Double Wedding Ring because I thought the linear lines of the fabrics would pair well with the curved piecing. I wanted it to be a mix of color, pattern, and gradation."

This modern take on a Double Wedding Ring design was inspired by Victoria Findlay Wolfe's Double Wedding Ring book. Lisa Mason says, "I love the effect I achieved by starting with the warm colors in the center and working out to the cool colors on the edges. I let Rachael Dorr quilt it any way she wanted, and the effect is wonderful."

What Would Kaffe Do by Barbara Jensen (Michigan)

This original quilt was machine appliqued, pieced, and quilted. Barbara Jensen says, "I love Kaffe Fassett's wonderful use of saturated color in his fabrics. When I saw the challenge to use Artisan fabrics in a quilt, I quickly jumped on board. It was a challenge to use the wide variety of colors and patterns.  When I encountered a difficult choice, I asked myself "What would Kaffe do?" This is how I arrived at the title."

Shaded Grids by Rebecca Buchert, quilted by Tamara Campbell

Rebecca Buchert titled her quilt "Shaded Grids". It uses simple classic blocks, alternating 36-patch checkerboards and 9-patch blocks made in strips. The quilt pattern, originally titled Gridlock, was published in Kaffe Fassett's first quilt book - Glorious Patchwork with Liza Prior Lucy - published in 1997.

Rebecca used a wide variety of cotton prints and batiks, strategically alternating light and darker fabrics to achieve a shaded effect. The overall quilting by Tamara Campbell was done in a meandering pattern, helping to soften the square lines of the blocks.

Kaffe continues, "My Artisan fabrics were inspired by my travels to ethnic markets where I witnessed beautifully hand-crafted textiles. Thus, Artisan by Kaffe Fassett for Free Spirit Fabrics was created, composed of 100% cotton, hand-dyed batik, primitive yarn-dyed woven & Ikat fabrics."
