Twist-and-turn Bargellos

This week, we are learning more about Bargello quilts and the artists who design and sew them.  Eileen Wright was born and raised in Canada and has been sewing and knitting since she was very young. Vancouver Island has been Eileen's spiritual home since her very first visit, and she has lived there for almost 20 years. She fills her days with designing and creating quilts.

Surf Song, 98 x 96", by Eileen Wright as seen at Martingale & Co

Surf Song, above, is one of the most popular of the 11 designs in Eileen Wright's Twist and Turn Bargello Quilts.  The stepwise progression of blues from dark to light - in about 12 steps - gives the waves their dimensional appearance. Kathy at Tamarack Shack Longarm Quilting (Manitoba) has some wonderful photos of her guild's Surf Song raffle quilt; you can see the finished quilt here and some handy design tips here.

Cosmic Twist, 60 x 80", by Eileen Wright as seen at Martingale & Co

In "Cosmic Twist", Eileen combined floral prints, swirls, dots and batiks in an analogous green-yellow to blue color scheme with a tropical flair.  These print fabrics create an interesting surface texture. The detail, including the beautiful quilting by Nadia Wilson, is shown in the close-up below.

Nadia Wilson, a representative/dealer of American Professional Quilting Systems (APQS) did the lovely quilting which you can see above.  She quilted from corner to corner along the lines of the Bargello design.  In this photo you can also see the piecing scheme, and the way in which the rectangles become narrower at the points of the "flames".

Infinity Bargello, 50 x 57", by Eileen Wright

We've seen this stunning "Infinity Bargello" in blue and red, but this version - done in pinks and fuchsias - really glows. All of the designs shown here (and more) can be found in Eileen's bestselling Twist-and-Turn Bargello Quilts (Martingale & Company). One reviewer has said: "I love the fact that she teaches you how to make the simple, traditional bargello and then brings you into the world of twisted bargellos, which are quite complicated and a little challenging."

  1. Those barguello are awesome. The first one catches my eyes!

  2. Does anyone know of measurements to make the infinity bargello quilt into a (king-) bed-size quilt?

  3. Does anyone know the Infinity quilt Row 1 center background fabric length.. I can't figure it out maybe I am missing where the length measurements are. Please help!

  4. I love the Infinity Bargello... would love to make one .. must get the book by Eileen Wright

  5. I love the bargello quilts and would like to make the Infinity pattern in the full or queen size. So I would love someone to help me get the size.

  6. HI Everyone,
Thank you for the comments and questions about how to make these beautiful bargello quilts for larger bed sizes. We searched and searched for an e-mail address or website for "Twist and Turn Bargello Quilts" author Eileen Wright. Sadly, we could not find any information about the author or how to contact her.
The best thing to do, in our opinion, is to borrow or purchase the book, in order to read all of Eileen's instructions. Unfortunately, we do not have access to this book; otherwise, we'd be glad to share any information that pertains to sewing the quilts in larger sizes. We apologize for any inconvenience. -- Marina and Daryl

  7. Olá eu até posso ajudar sobre a medida da cama , agora vai depender se é king ou super-king ou normal por que tem 3 tamanhos de cama eu faço bargello pra cama de casal, qual quer dúvida estou pra responder.
    Obrigado Kelly Teles 😘😘😘

  8. Hi Everyone,
Here is a translation of Kelly Teles' remarks above:
"Hello I can help on the size of the bed, which depends on whether it is king-size or super-king size, or standard, which are 3.separate bed sizes." Thank you Kelly Teles 😘😘😘"

Thank you, Kelly! We agree that there are now so many various bed sizes available, that it is difficult to predict exactly which size to make the quilt without specific measurements. We still recommend making the effort to obtain a copy of Eileen's book, in order to read all of the instructions. -- Marina and Daryl Lynn
