In North America, the first snows have fallen, reminding us of Christmas. This beautiful quilt was selected for the exhibition 'An Exquisite Moment' by Dinner at Eight Artists at the 2013 Houston International Quilt Festival.
First Snow, 24 x 60", by Susan Brubaker Knapp
"First Snow" by Susan Brubaker Knapp was inspired by a 2003 photo of her two girls trying to catch snowflakes on their tongues. This quilt perfectly fits the theme of Exquisite Moments, as described by the curators: "Consider the following: The unfurling of a flower... a magical moment shared with a lover or friend... a treasured memory. The sacred moments of the ordinary. These are the Exquisite Moments that make us who we are."

Susan writes, "Is there anything more enchanting than the first snow of the season? Watching my children as they experienced it always brought back memories of my own first snows- filled with magic, joy, and wonder. "

Susan's techniques consist of fused applique, paint applied to fabric, thread sketching, and free motion machine quilting.
This blog entry at Blue Moon River describes the very interesting detailed processes Susan used to construct this beautiful quilt.
