Happy President's Day

Presidents' Day is a U.S. federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. Here is a quilt designed and made by Cathie Hoover, who says: "To honor our founding father, (George Washington 1732-1799), Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, and our First President, I created this quilt using apps on my iPad."

Washington by Cathie I. Hoover, California

The strong horizontal lines of quilting on the background contrast nicely with the rounded shape of the clouds and the depiction of General Washington astride his horse, providing a three-dimensional effect to Cathie's work.

Cathie continues, "[The] sky was painted with Septacolor paint. The words were created with stencils and Versatex ink."

Henry Lee, a major general in the Continental Army, was chosen by the Sixth Congress to write the eulogy after President Washington's death in 1799. He composed the famous words, "First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen."

Red & White Quilt Inspiration

Red and white quilts have timeless appeal! The striking contrast of red against white lends itself to a variety of designs and styles, whether pieced or appliqued. We love this appliqued beauty featuring flowers, birds, baskets, a tea service, toadstools, and beautiful borders.

Red Delicious by Judy Tenen, quilted by Judy Tenen

Judy Tenen won a prize for her gorgeous quilt, which is primarily appliqued and machine quilted.  She says, "I enjoy the Australian quilt maker, Esther Alieu, so I tried this [Red Delicious] pattern."

The center basket motif, which is done in a gingham print that resembles a basket design, is overflowing with cherries. A floral print fabric was used to create the semi-round "tablecloth" on which the basket sits.
