Rhapsody in Red and Blue

Red, white, and blue are the colors of the American flag, but they work together for any occasion. A warm color like red invokes feelings of passion and energy, which contrasts with the refreshing calmness of cool blue tones inspire. This quilt sparkles with energy.

Rhapsody in Red and Blue by Ann Adams

This quilt was all hand pieced with octagons, kites, 4-point stars, isosceles triangles, star wings and diamonds. The design is based on the English paper pieced pattern - Celestial Star - by Sharon Burgess (Lilabelle Lane Creations.) Ann Adams used the following fabrics: Quilting Treasures' Bohemian Rhapsody, Benartex' Rabbit Hole, Wanderlust Tapestry and solid blues.  The fabrics were used to create kaleidoscope effects throughout the quilt.

We admire Ann Adams'  impressive hand piecing and hand quilting techniques. she was awarded a second place ribbon for this stunning quilt.

A Miniature Landscape: Arizona Understated challenge

Small paintings are not unusual. But small landscape quilts are few and far between, posing many challenges!

Today's miniature quilt was exhibited as part of a Regional Quilt challenge titled Arizona Understated by the SAQA (Studio Art Quilt Associates.) The participating artists were challenged to create a 12" x 16" quilt depicting a hidden treasure in Arizona. Brenda Smith captured the landscape with hand dyed fabrics that reflect the natural hues and textures of the sandstone cliffs.

Betatakin by Brenda Smith

Betatakin (meaning ledge house ) is a large cluster of well-preserved cliff dwellings thought to have been inhabited by the Anasazi during the latter 1200s. Springs fed into farmlands on the canyon floor, and homes were built in the natural sandstone alcoves. Betatakin is part of the Navajo National Monument.

Brenda Smith used a variety of fabrics and hues to depict the towering rock cliffs of this historic site. Brenda says, "As a contemporary art quilter, I am inspired by the natural world near my home in Northern Arizona. My work is related to nature and the southwestern landscapes through color, pattern, and design." We enjoyed these organic shapes, accentuated by smooth line quilting, done with matching thread colors.

Marvelous Miniatures (3)

Miniature quilts require considerable skill, especially when applique is involved.  Today's quilter, Judy Tenen, used a 5 x 7" greeting card as her inspiration... read on to see just how tiny this quilt is!

Greeting Card Quilt by Judy Tenen

There is amazing detail in this tiny quilt, which shows a pair of cardinals perched on top of a clothesline quilt. Here is another photo showing the quilt next to a friend's hand in front of (not touching) the quilt:

The original artwork, by Rebecca Barker, was used with permission. Quilter Judy Tenen explains: "Rebecca Barker is a talented artist with a line of greeting cards that feature quilts [Rebecca calls them "Quiltscapes"].

Judy continues, "I asked her if I could reproduce her greeting card in the form of a quilt and she graciously agreed. This little quilt depicts her artwork." Shown below is the actual greeting card. Judy Tenen did a fabulous job reproducing this artwork in fabric!

Marvelous Miniatures (2)

Let's continue the week with another fabulous mini quilt!  Miniature quilt blocks are often scaled down from 12" to only 1". As you can imagine, these tiny works of art require considerable patience and skill, but the results are so much fun.  We love the tropical colors of this quilt!

Monkey Business by Peg Clampet

This quilt was inspired by the 2022 Mini Series sew Along hosted by Giucy Giuce and Alison Glass. The The twelve blocks utilize foundation paper piecing to create a variety of tiny blocks. For her primary fabric, Peg Clampet used the Jungle Paradise line by Stacy Iest Hsu for Moda Fabrics.

The tiny size of these blocks can be appreciated when viewed next to the red quilt show ribbon (for 2nd place!) and a friend's hand, on the left:

Here are some of the great blocks from the Sew Along posted by Alison Glass, including Pineapple and Courthouse Steps:

Desert Peacock by Peter Adams, quilted by Valerie Greenwell

The creator of Desert Peacock, Peter Adams, explains: "This mandala designed quilt is the end product of a class I took (with Keith Dommer at Quilters Market) concentrating on invisible, turned-edge applique. When I completed the mandala circle, the particular shapes and colors evoked visions of a peacock tail.)

Here is another photo of Desert Peacock (with a hand in front, not touching, to show the scale):

And a closeup photo showing the invisible applique (we can confirm that the applique stitches are invisible!)

Sonoran Poppy Trio by Stephanie Nordlin

This original art quilt - designed by Stephanie Nordlin - features California, Matilija, and Mexican poppies rendered in 3D. Each type of poppy blooms after its own seasonal rain, and with distinctly different leaves in both shape and color. As you can see, Stephanie achieved outstanding delicacy and transparency with her art quilting techniques. She is a juried artist member of Studio Art Quilt Associates.

Blossoms on Parade by Barbara Lambrecht

Here are some lovely flowers in a lovely setting! The curved blocks give the appearance of "cathedral windows".  Barbara Lambrecht says, “I used to do a LOT of applique and started designing my own patterns in the 1990’s. This is one I taught for years in eastern Washington state and northern Idaho. It is one of two I’ve made as a “twin set”. This one is all my original design.”

Black Beauty by Ingrid Lawrence Happel, quilted by Tracy Yadon

Beautiful applique, and a wide variety of flowers, can be seen in this art quilt by Ingrid Lawrence Happel. She says, “When I saw this pattern I knew I had to make it. As usual I did change the flowers and the border. I enjoy hand applique and took a local class to sharpen my skills.” Pattern source: Barbara Brandeburg, a variation of Winter Botanical.
