Aboriginal Fireworks, made and quilted by Carole Schumacher (Arizona)

"I wanted to learn how to make a variety of Dresden plates.  I used aboriginal fabrics, complimentary solids, and scraps of my black Chico crop pants to make numerous Dresdens, then put them together for a fireworks of autumn colors." Carole did the hand guided quilting on a stationary machine. In the closeup photo below, the fussy-cut center of the Dresden Plate reads "Be creative, Be happy."

Who Does Your Stripes? made and quilted by Mel Dugosh (Texas) @quiltanddagger

This original design was created with hand applique, embellishment, embroidery, and piecing; and machine piecing and quilting.  Mel Dugosh says, "During my first snorkeling excursion in the Gulf of Mexico, many colorful fish surrounded my hands, staring in awe and amazement at my intricately painted fingernails. they appeared to ask, "Who does your stripes?"

This quilt perfectly reflects the theme of this exhibit, "Celebrate Life."  Mel says, "The deeper question for me has been understanding the wonders of intimate, unspoken relationships between humans and all creatures celebrating life."

Long May She Wave by Christine Mahon, quilted by Sharon Elsberry.

Christine Mahon says, "I served in the US Army for 27 years including deployment to Desert Storm.  The flag and what it represents — freedom, our republic and all that makes America so blessed — have always been important to me.

I made this embroidered piece years ago in an Artista Club class with Claudia Dinell [of Claudia's Creations].  As we approached [our nation's] 250th anniversary, I decided to give it new life and finish it as a wall hanging to commemorate the anniversary.  Long May She Wave indeed!"

Back Pocket Blues (+ FREE patterns!)

We love quilts made from recycled clothing such as denim jeans!  Here is a work of art by Candace Hackett Shively, who is a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA). This original wall quilt is made with jeans pockets as if seen from "behind"!

p.s. Check out our E-Bay shop for great bargains on jewelry, clothing, and collectibles! For continuous free quilt patterns, follow us on Twitter !

Back Pocket Blues by Candace Hackett Shively @chshively (Fayetteville, Georgia)

Back Pocket Blues was made with hand applique, dyeing, and painting; machine piecing, applique, and quilting; painting using Derwent inktense pencils; and hand-guided machine lettering. Candace Hackett Shively says, "Our blue jeans, especially their back pockets, document our day-to-day lives in a blues tune of thread and softness. The faded indigo and frayed edges wrap around our bodies and our hands with familiarity.  We rely on those pockets to keep us company, keep us organized, and add a bit of improvisational blues to our lives."

Shown below are some of the machine-quilted sayings around the border of the quilt, which reflect everyday thoughts about stuff we keep in our jeans pockets (Anybody see my keys? - Can't live without pockets!)

Swallowtail Butterfly, made and quilted by Sara Quigley

From the Flutterly Fabulous Butterfly Collection at Patterns by Shaley, the Swallowtail block was designed after the Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly, scientific name Protographium marcellus

This block assembles in 44 sections and is Foundation Paper Pieced. It is recommended for those with lots of FPP experience as there is a lot of small piecing. Sara Quigley says: "I enjoyed being a pattern tester.  This one was a challenge and I love the result."

The pattern finishes to 15x15", 20"x20", or 30"x30" - great for mini quilts and throw pillows, or add a border and make a baby blanket!

Thank U, Next #24 by Ashlee Rudert (Bountiful, Utah)

This stunning black & white quilt used the Illustrations fabric collection by Alli K Design for Moda Fabrics. To add a hint of color, Ashlee also included a large print fabric with hints of periwinkle and taupe.  The quilt is based on the FREE Illustrated Squares quilt pattern by Alli K (CLICK for PDF download!)

Ashlee says she began working on this project during the filming of Handi Quilter's Clueless Quilter, Episode 5.  "I decided to approach it as a sampler quilt that would feature different stitching techniques.  My friend, Kim Sandberg, taught me several tips on how to use rulers, adjust tension for various types of thread, and helped me try out special accessory feet while we filmed the episode."
