Alone No More

This abstract quilt reminds us of a Picasso portrait! The asymmetric face evolved from leftover, improvisationally-pieced blocks. Heidi Massingill says, "I call them orphan blocks, but don't like them to be orphaned for too long. It was a fun personal challenge to create something from such a simple start."

p.s. Check out our E-Bay shop for bargains on jewelry, clothing, and collectibles. For free patterns, follow us on X/Twitter!

Alone No More by Heidi Massingill (Avon, Ohio) @sewbot

Alone No More was improvisationally pieced, machine appliqued, and machine quilted on a frame (longarm) and without a frame (domestic).  Heidi says that this fun portrait "evolved several times, staring at me in my studio wanting to be complete, until I added the final swirl in her pink hair."

Triangle Man

"Triangle man, Triangle man, Doing the things a triangle can."  This is the theme of a small quilt by Cordelia Nance, a member of the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild. Machine piecing was used to create 800 tiny half-square triangle blocks.

Triangle Man, made and quilted by Cordelia Nance (Seattle, Washington) @NotMadeByRobots

Cordelia Nance made this small quilt as an explorationof triangles. The design creates an optical illusion, as if the triangles are overlaid on concentric light or dark rectangles. Viewed another way, you can also see flying geese patterns.

Grasses

Grasses is the perfect name for this modern quilt... we can almost see the long grasses blowing in the wind! Pip Porter explains that this quilt was improvisationally pieced with cotton and linen fabrics. Grasses was quilted on a longarm with organic lines using variegated and plain cotton threads.

A member of the Melbourne (Australia) Modern Quilt Guild, Pip Porter says: "I lost my motivation a while back so committed to 15 minutes of improv piecing each day. A couple of weeks later I had a pile of improv strips and started piecing them together until they were used up and I had regained my motivation."  See the closeup photo below showing the interesting modern prints and hand-quilted details.

Red & White in Australia

Red, white and modern! This improvisationally pieced quilt exemplifies the use of negative space. A swath of white forms a crisp contrast with the angular red blocks. Pip Porter says, "Who knew there were so many reds and whites in my stash?" Scroll down for a closeup of Pip's machine and hand quilting.

Red & White Study #1, made and quilted by Pip Porter @mizrini (Aberfoyle Park, South Australia, Australia)

A member of the Melbourne (Australia) Modern Quilt Guild, Pip Porter explains that this quilt was made for part of an intended series of red and white quilts, which happened to coincide with a guild Red and White challenge.
