Hand Applique Renaissance

The Pacific International Quilt Festival was held in October in Santa Clara, California. This year's show included over 400 quilts and other items on exhibit. We're featuring some of our favorite pieces from the show!

Spring Bouquet, 72 x 72", by Ann Zemke

Spring Bouquet was featured in a special exhibit titled Ann Zemke: One-Woman Hand Piecing & Hand Applique Renaissance for All About Color Quilting. Many different Kaffe Fassett fabrics can be seen in this incredibly colorful quilt!

Ann used the freezer paper prepared applique method to create the block pieces. The blocks were then hand appliqued, and machine pieced to construct the quilt. (The tiny four-patch blocks, seen at the right of the closeup photo, were also machine pieced.) Spring Bouquet was custom quilted using a wool batt over a cotton batt. We love the way the flowers and leaves pop out from the surface of the quilt!

The pattern is by Edyta Sitar at Laundry Basket Quilts.
